	Design is _____.&#38;nbsp;was created with the goal of showcasing the work of San José State University’s BFA Graphic Design program while challenging viewers to reflect on their thoughts on design. Featuring a variety of different mediums (Posters, Books, Product Design...etc.), the exhibition offers unique perspectives on what design can be, allowing viewers the opportunity to connect with the design process and engage with pieces from new perspectives.

A team of nine was divided into four different positions: content writer, marketing, drafting, and production. Two other designers and I were involved with designing communication materials such as brand concept, promotional items, and wayfinding.

	Design Is Process

A process book was made to document how this show created — every detail and decision archived into this process book; from coming up conceptual ideas to executing the design in the space. I was tasked to design the layout and visual presentation, and to work with content writers as they came up with beautiful and informative writing.

3IAB: The Process of Product Development



At DocuSign, we believe great products are created through the convergence of three unique perspectives: Business, User, and Technology. To ensure each of these perspectives is represented in our product development process, our teams adopted the 3-in-a-box (3IAB) collaboration model. This the ideal process we use to launch and continually improve our products across the company. We were successful using this process during the simplified sending experience project.

My design managers and I saw an opportunity to spread this collaboration model across the product team so we decided to make a poster. My designer managers provided the content and I visualized their ideas into an infographic poster.

	Not A Linear But A Cycle Process
	I visualized the process being a linear path, but in fact, it is actually a cycle which is constantly in motion. After we launch the product and monitor performance, the data and findings will help us loopback to identify user problems so we can make improvements, and keep us on track of the goals we’re aiming to achieve.

DocuSign New Sending Experience is an improved workflow that provides customers with a simple, focused and educated experience to send documents and get them signed.


	


Started with a visionDuring late 2016, the design team had an opportunity to explore and revise the document sending experience in DocuSign. Based on a collective feedback from our customers, our team came up with a few thoughtful and creative directions and presented to other stakeholders, including our chief product officer. After multiple rounds of design showcases, we got the support from DocuSign and began to construct a better ecosystem for consumers and businesses.

What did I do?As I helped design the experiences, I worked very closely with other stakeholders; product manager, engineers, researchers, and other designers. Together, we were able to deliver a minimum loveable product with a compelling design process. My role involved with user experience (desktop and web-responsive), visual design, and product flow. I also attended research sessions, taking notes and listening to our users when they were testing the new version.


	
	

Defining The Problems
We had received a collective feedback from customers, here are the 5 pain points that we were focusing on:
1. “I don’t know where to start.”2. “I don’t know whether I should sign or send a document.”3. “I don’t understand the concept of workflow/signing order.”4. “I don’t understand why I should tag a document or how to do it.”5. “I don’t want to waste my 3 free sends.”
	

Solving The ProblemsStarting from the pain point, I tried to find solutions to solve them and introduce new features overall to improve the user experience.

Homepage Revamp [Ref: Problem #1]
We understand first impression is important, and it is a disappointment to hear some of our new customers were frustrated to begin when they first login. Overall, I’ve made many changes on the current homepage. Bringing a document dropzone instead of a button to start the experience, reorganize some of the information hierarchy and trying to avoid too much information being required to get a result in the first instance.
Have a brief introduction modal when they first login, it help them to understand through step-by-step instructions that explain the process of sending documents and getting them signed.
Rearrange the hierarchy and introduce a document dropzone to be the primary call to action so users can start sending documents in the quickest way possible.
Repurpose “What’s new” and introduce “Cards” to our customers. These cards will help customers to discover more features in DocuSign, including templates, upgrade plans, live chat assistant, and mobile app. By using colorful and fun illustrations, it will help to digest information from each card.

Breaking the experience [Ref: Problem #2—3]
From the current experience, a one-page envelope set up is a bit overwhelming for our users; setting up envelope name, envelop description, upload documents, add receivers/signers, and write a personal message. Because they don’t understand the value of each section or think it is unnecessary, they tend to leave it blank. One of the biggest improvement of the sending experience is to break them into four individual step: upload documents, add signers, place signature fields and send messages. That way, users can focus on one thing at a time and easier to digest.

	To help senders differentiate between sign or send a document, we introduce “who needs to sign?” concept. Senders can choose between “Me” and “Others” and goes to different experience; When senders choose “Me”, they will be redirect to a singing experience. When sender choose “Others,” they ,can continue with the experience by entering recipients’ information. If they select both, sender’s signing experience will come up after they send out the document. During the second step—Select Recipient, senders can enter recipient's info and arrange the signing order. This page was designed like a diagram so they can clearly see who sign first.The last step is Review, combining message and summary that can help senders check and confirm everything that is ready to go and they can also set up message to recipients when they want to provide further instructions.

Refine the details [Problem #4—5]As we were solving some of the bigger issues, we never forget to refine and to improve some of the details in the product.

Working with content writer and refined FTU (First Time User) experience tooltips and modals with instructions so help some beginners to follow through.After senders send out documents to their recipients, a post-sending page will appear as confirmation. There are different post-sending pages depending on different scenarios. Some of them will have call to action in order to discover more features. For example, when senders constantly sending the same document, we will suggest them to make a template and prompt the “Make a template” button.Instead of showing the countdown meter (some of the accounts have limited sends) from the homepage. We used toast messages and utilized the post-sending page to remind senders when they need to upgrade.

Results &#38;amp; ImpactAs we released this product to our customers, we received numbers of positive feedback from them. They were satisfied with the improved experience being intuitive and focus. We were also monetize and measure our users’ behavior by using Mixpanel to track users data. We were able to see what experiment causes the most send rates and using data to find the struggle points. As for the results, not only customers are satisfied with the experience, but also we are able to see a significant positive change compared to the current experience:

Splash Identity &#38;amp; Branding
Splash, a design tool that empower business experts to create enterprise products, challenged the visual design team to create an visual identity that spanned everything from identity and illustration to custom patterns and icons. The goal is to translate the excitement of being a creator and make something modern, fun, and thoughtful. The overall end result is something that is unique and stands out from the rest of the user experience tool industry. 

The visual design team hosted branding workshop with all stakeholders, brainstormed ideas through design exercises, had a sketching session with the design team. After many rounds of critiques and reviews, my version of logo was selected and had been used for the interface and marketing collaterals.

Discover&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#124; &#38;nbsp; Learn&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#124;&#38;nbsp; Design

Often times, business applications that were made by enterprise experts are difficult to use. Most of the business experts are not familiar with the design process and lack of knowledge about product development. We saw an opportunity to bridge the UX gap and to guide them to a design journey that focuses on three core values: Discover new ideas, Learning through research data, and Design a viable product. We provide templates in Gallery so creators can get inspired by new ideas and they can jump-start a project right away.&#38;nbsp;We provide templates in Gallery so creators can get inspired by new ideas and they can jump-start a project right away.
With many experiences in the industry, designers and strategists at SAP offer the best practices (For example, “How to talk to users?”) on learning about designing a feasible product. We also create an intuitive space with the best tools for our creators to get creative and design the product that is suitable for their users’ needs. Lastly, creators can publish their products and collect user data through our research tool so they can understand users’ needs.

What did I do?My role as a visual designer is to help lead the design concept, and develop visually compelling and beautiful user interfaces. I was working closely with the UX Designers and Design lead to create and to bring ideas to life that help drive delightful experiences, with the goal to constantly push creative boundaries and create truly impactful experiences for our customers. In addition, I had the opportunity to develop and create its identity and branding.

Pushing Visual BoundariesAs we observed other enterprise design tools being standardized and dry, we pushed Splash’s visual language to be modern, fun and simple. We want to create a environment that is design centric to get inspired, be thoughtful and get creative. We created simple but compelling illustrations throughout Splash to enhance the experience. We played with the layout and used unique color palette to stay away from being typical enterprise product. As we move on with the development, a design system was later established to ensure consistency for all our designers.

Since Splash's beta launch in Teched Las Vegas and Barcelona in November 2015, it has gained an positive feedback and interest from SAP’s customers. Splash received Honorable Mention in UXAwards 2015 and shortlisted for IxDA interaction awards 2016.

Hoyin’s tenure at Braze was marked by a commitment to strategic design leadership and impactful product contributions. He initiated and facilitated a two-day Design Sprint workshop, successfully cultivating stakeholder collaboration and developing actionable solutions (i.e., Canvas Templates). A key part of his role involved actively shaping the team's annual strategy, introducing innovative ideas, identifying new opportunities, and providing crucial design feedback, ultimately solidifying strategic direction through visionary prototypes and productive engagement with Engineering. He guided the design of a sophisticated yet intuitive user experience for Canvas, Braze's marketing journey builder, which empowered marketers to create high-impact customer journeys.
